The One-Straw Revolution
by Masanobu
Fukuoka. Rodale Press. 184 pages, hardcover, c. 1978. ISBN 087857-220-1.
A very interesting introduction to natural farming and back-to-nature lifestyle as expressed in a very Japanese way. Fukuoka was an agricultural scientist until he got sick and had a mental breakdown. He went back to trying to farm in a more natural way, without the use of pesticides and herbicides. Most of his advice and techniques are for small scale rice farming, but he has a wonderful attitude towards life and farming that can be generalized for many people seeking a way "back to nature." In many ways, he sounds like a kind of Ueshiba Morihei (the founder of aikido). Ueshiba also stressed that farming and martial arts training go hand in hand. He sometimes gets way involved for me in anti-science and anti-Western logic polemics, but underneath his diatribes is a person who found his own way to live a simple and satisfying life. He would have in well with the Flower Power days. I'm sure this book can be found as a softcover somewhere.
