Aikido: Ueshiba Kisshomaru: Shiho Nage
Ueshiba Kisshomaru recently passed away. He was the son of the founder of aikido, Ueshiba Morihei. This footage was taken in 1994 at the Hawaii Aikikai's hombu dojo, at Waialae Avenue, in Honolulu, Hawai'i, on one of his last visits to the United States. Doshu (his honorific name as head of the Aikikai) was discussing the aikido theory of circle and point as he throws his partner using shiho nage. It is instructive to see the clip in slow motion and to see how smoothly Doshu flows, in circular motion around a central axis of balance. In the last example of the throw, he even slows down to show how he is in balance, while the opponent is spun around him because of the use of body positioning, wrist and arm locking, and the opponent's own redirected energy. |
