The Shinto Muso-ryu (Uchida-ryu) tanjo

The Shinto Muso-ryu jodo system is primarily based on the jo, a staff about four feet in length. But it also has some tanjo ("short-bo") techniques, from the Uchida-ryu. Demonstrating one technique is Joseph Cieslik (left) and Nishioka Tsuneo Sensei (from issue #2 of Furyu magazine). In this series of animated GIFs, Joseph is attacked from behind. He pivots, gets out of the way of the overhead strike, and places the tanjo through the underarm of Nishioka sensei so that he can effect an arm dislocation.
